It may be necessary to scan a patient who is currently pregnant. What follows is a summary of UK national guidance and some practical advice.
The MHRA guidelines for the clinical use of MRI recommend that pregnant patients be scanned in Normal mode. In addition, be mindful of patient positioning, particularly in the third trimester i.e. if possible, position the patient in such a way as to avoid aortocaval compression.
Scanning in controlled mode (also known as first level) requires additional risk-benefit review and clinical approval. Therefore, in these instances, to avoid delay in seeking additional approval, aim to conduct the scan in normal mode.
