If you have any questions or concerns about your suitability for an MRI scan, we strongly recommend you contact the MRI unit who will be conducting your scan, prior to attending for your scan.

MRI scanners use a powerful magnet and radiowaves to obtain pictures of your body. While MRI is considered a very safe technique, there are some concerns that need to be addressed prior to deciding whether or not it is safe to proceed with your MRI scan.

To ensure your safety we need to ensure that any implants or devices in or on your body are suitable for the MRI room and MRI scanner. If you have been referred for an MRI scan and you are unsure as to whether an implant or device you have is suitable for MRI, please contact the MRI department prior to attending for your appointment. This will allow them to establish whether or not you are safe to proceed with the scan. This also helps to avoid delays to your scan while information is being found or potentially the scan being cancelled.

For some MRI scans, a dye or ‘contrast’ is administered via an injection. You will be asked questions when you attend for your MRI appointment to ensure you are suitable to receive the dye. Of particular interest are: Pregnancy, kidney function and prior allergic reactions. For more information on your the MR contrast injection, see the poster by clicking here.

It is important that you answer all safety questions honestly, this will allow the department to ensure your safety.
