This policy does not cover the use of MRI on patients with stents other than cardiac stents. This policy covers the use of 1.5T and 3T MRI on patients with cardiac stents. That is, this policy covers considerations for both single and multiple overlapping cardiac stents.

NHSL: Patients with cardiac stents referred for examinations that require 1st level mode (e.g. renal or peripheral angiogram) will have the conditions of their stents checked to ensure scanning is not off-label. If necessary to perform an MR scan off-label, a risk-benefit justification should be performed by a radiologist.

NHSL Policy: The NHSL Policy will be as per GGC Policy, which states: “Patients with single or multiple overlapping cardiac stents, immediately following stent implantation, 1.5T or 3T MRI can safely proceed using the Normal Operating Mode of the scanner. Multiple pulse sequences per protocol are allowed but any single sequence must not exceed 15 mins in length.”
