The policy only applies to 1.5T and 3T MRI of patients with Intrauterine contraceptive devices

NHSL Policy: The NHSL Policy will be as per GGC Policy, which states: “I If the patient has an IUD implanted anywhere except China then proceed as follows:

Intrauterine contraceptive devices are usually made from plastic with an active copper element. To date there have been no adverse events as a result of a patient with an IUD being scanned with MRI when made of these components. In this situation 1.5T and 3T MRI may safely proceed.

If the patient has an IUD implanted in China then proceed as follows:

It is known that in China, a stainless steel ring IUD was extensively used which has been shown to have some ferrous properties. Patients with this type may not even know they are fitted, and their removal is not guaranteed to be fragment free. Although production stopped in 2000, there is evidence to suggest that the practice continues in China. Therefore, for devices implanted in China confirmation (e.g. device documentation from medical records) that a stainless-steel type IUD is not present must be obtained. If the device is not stainless steel then the MR scan can proceed. If a stainless steel IUD is confirmed or the device information cannot be determined and the scan is a high priority then a risk vs. benefit justification process may be appropriate. Alternatively, non-urgent patients may be referred to a sexual clinic for device removal or replacement with an MR Conditional device.
